Since 1938, Clark, Thomas & Winters has built a solid reputation for community service through the donation of thousands of hours of legal advice to hundreds of pro bono clients, principally through Volunteer Legal Services of Central Texas (VLS). Because of the firm's constant support of and active involvement in pro bono legal services, VLS made Clark, Thomas & Winters its first recipient of the Joseph H. Hart Award in 1999, and again received the award in 2009, the only firm to receive this prestigious award twice.
The firm first became involved with VLS by representing pro bono clients in bankruptcy, consumer, and housing matters. The firm's attorneys then expanded their pro bono services into more widely ranging areas such as family law and SSI cases. The firm also provides two or more attorneys numerous times each year to give free legal advice at VLS' evening clinic. The firm has participated in the evening pro bono clinics since 1994 and, as a result, has inspired other firms and organizations to participate as well.
In addition to pro bono legal services, Clark, Thomas & Winters provides VLS with regular financial support through annual contributions and special donations. The firm's attorneys help raise money for VLS by calling other lawyers to solicit contributions during the annual VLS/Legal Aid Phone-a-thon. The firm also allows VLS attorneys to use its extensive library and has loaned paralegals, secretaries, and couriers to VLS for various projects.
